Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese aikidō.

Etymology: < Japanese aikidō (1942 or earlier) < aiki (see aikijutsu n.) + dō way (see budo n.), perhaps as a shortening of aikibudō (c1936 or earlier); compare aiki-bujutsu, a name for an earlier form of the art (c1922 or earlier).The art was developed by its founder Morihei Uyeshiba over a period of time, during which its precursors took a number of different names, in addition to the ones cited above. One of these was aiki-no-michi (1926; michi being the native Japanese equivalent to the loanword dō , written with the same kanji), another was aiki-jūjutsu , which had previously been used to denote Daito-ryu ju-jutsu, a traditional style which Uyeshiba had studied and subsequently taught (see aikijutsu n.).

A Japanese form of self-defence and martial art, developed from jujitsu, in which locks, holds, throws, and the opponent's own momentum are used to gain advantage.
