Etymology: < Japanese aikijutsu, probably a contraction of aiki-jūjutsu (early 20th cent. as part of an alternative name for Daito-ryu ju-jutsu; 1932 or earlier with reference to a precursor of aikido: see aikido n.) < aiki (in budo) achieving a balance between an opponent's power and one's own (1899; < ai- , combining form of au to match, be in harmony + ki ki n.²; see note) + jūjutsu jujitsu n.
