Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymons: Japanese aikijutsu, aiki-jūjutsu.
Etymology: < Japanese aikijutsu, probably a contraction of aiki-jūjutsu (early 20th cent. as part of an alternative name for Daito-ryu ju-jutsu; 1932 or earlier with reference to a precursor of aikido: see aikido n.) < aiki (in budo) achieving a balance between an opponent's power and one's own (1899; < ai- , combining form of au to match, be in harmony + ki ki n.2; see note) + jūjutsu jujitsu n. Compare also Japanese aiki-bujutsu (see aikido n.). Compare earlier jujitsu n., ninjutsu n.Compare the following earlier references to the Japanese concept of aiki in English contexts:1913 E. J.
