Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Ailanthus, Ailantus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Ailanthus, genus name (R. Desfontaines 1786, in Hist. de l'Acad. Royale des Sciences (1788) 265), Ailantus (1825), apparently < Malay (Ambonese) ai lanit tree reaching to the sky < ai tree (compare standard Malay kayu) + lanit sky (compare standard Malay langit). Compare French ailanthe (R. Desfontaines 1786, in the source cited above), ailante (1845), Spanish ailanto (1802 or earlier), Portuguese ailanto, †aylantho, †ailantho (1859 or earlier), Italian ailanto (1801 or earlier).In the scientific Latin form Ailanthus with alteration after ancient Greek ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.). In the form ailante probably after French. In forms with final -o apparently after forms in other Romance languages. With these compare also the apparent Malay (Ambonese) form aylanto cited by G.E. Rumphius (a1706, in Herbarium Amboinense (1748) III. 206), who is referred to by Desfontaines. Rumphius also cites a standard Malay form (as caju langit); his post-classical Latin name arbor coeli, lit. ‘tree of the sky’ is formed after the Malay.

Any of several fast-growing, pinnate-leaved trees constituting the chiefly East Asian genus Ailanthus (family Simaroubaceae); esp. the tree of heaven, A. altissima, native to China and now naturalized in parts of Europe and North America, where it has been widely planted as a shade tree and for ornament but is now considered invasive.
