Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aileron.
Etymology: < French aileron (17th cent. in sense 1; 1909 or earlier in sense 2), specific uses of aileron extremity of a bird's wing (1393 in Middle French as aleron ) < aile wing (see ailette n.) + -eron, diminutive suffix. O.E.D. Suppl. (1933) gives the pronunciation as (ēi·lĕrǫ̆n) /ˈeɪlərən/.
1. Entomology. In dipteran flies: an alula. Now disused.
