Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Albumose.
Etymology: < German Albumose (W. Kühne 1877, in Verhandl. Naturhist.-medic. Vereins Heidelberg 1 239) < Album- (in Albumin albumin n.) + -ose (see -ose suffix2). Earlier in English in prefixed forms denoting distinct types, as anti-albumose and hemialbumose n. at hemi- prefix 3 (reflecting coinages in Kühne's 1877 paper). Compare earlier albuminose n.
Biochemistry. Now historical.
Any of a class of polypeptides (proteoses) formed by the partial digestion of a protein or (spec.) of an albumin. Cf. globulose n., albuminose n.hemi-, hetero-, phyt-, protoalbumose, etc.: see the first element.
