Etymology: < Spanish alcázar fortress, castle, palace (11th cent.) < Spanish Arabic al-qaṣar < Arabic al the + Spanish Arabic qaṣar , regional variant of literary Arabic qaṣr fortress, castle, palace ( < classical Latin castrum encampment, fortress: see castrum n.).In modern use frequently as the name of various buildings in Spain (compare e.g. quots. 1906, 1988, 2001).
