释义

alcidn.

Brit. /ˈalsɪd/, U.S. /ˈælsəd/
Forms: also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Alca , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Alca, genus name ( Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 130; see below) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Alcidae (1844 or earlier), previously Alcadae ( Synopsis Contents Brit. Mus. (ed. 17, 1820) 70). Scientific Latin Alca is < post-classical Latin alca (1677 or earlier), earlier alka (1650 or earlier; attributed to the Norwegian physician and historian Henrik Høyer (d. 1615 or 1616)), probably < either Danish alke or Norwegian alke (for both, see auk n.).
