Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alienisparsisonus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin alienisparsisonus, adjective ( J. D. Rhys Cambrobrytannicae Cymbraecaeve linquae institutiones et rudimenta (1592) 142) < classical Latin aliēnus alien adj. + post-classical Latin sparsisonus , designating a kind of syllable ending in two consonants of which at least one is a continuan (1592 in the source cited above; < classical Latin sparsus sparse adj. + -sonus sounding < sonus sound: see sound n.3), after Welsh dieithrleddf , adjective (16th cent. in the passage translated in quot. 1856; < dieithr strange, alien (14th cent.) + lleddf kind of syllable ending in two consonants of which at least one is a continuant (c1400), use as noun of lleddf declining, oblique (13th cent.)). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æliˌī:niˌspā·ɹsisǫn) /ælɪˌiːnɪˈspɑːsɪsɒn/.
Obsolete. rare.
In Welsh prosody: a syllable consisting of a non-Welsh sound followed by a gravisparsison (gravisparsison n.) or fortisparsison (fortisparsison n.).
