Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aligoté.

Etymology: < French regional (Burgundy) aligoté variety of vine (1807 or earlier), variety of grape (1829 or earlier), kind of white wine made from these grapes (mid 20th cent. or earlier), perhaps an (otherwise unattested) survival of a use as noun of the past participle of Old French haligoter (mid 13th cent.), variant of harigoter to tear up (late 12th cent.; < a West Germanic verb with the sense ‘to spoil’, apparently cognate with harry v. + French -oter , suffix forming verbs), perhaps so called on account of its inferior quality. Compare haricot n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (aligote) /aliɡɔte/.
