Etymology: Either (i) < Middle French, French alimentation act of nourishing (1412), nourishment, subsistence (1483; < alimenter aliment v. + -ation -ation suffix); or (ii) < post-classical Latin alimentation-, alimentatio nourishment, sustenance (from 15th cent. in British and continental sources) < alimentat- , past participial stem of alimentare aliment v. + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Old Occitan alimentation (1453), Spanish alimentación (1483), Portuguese alimentação (1610).
