Biology.
a. A segment of prokaryotic DNA involved in the cell's defence mechanisms against viruses, consisting of short, repeating, palindromic base sequences interspersed with spacer sequences (spacer n.1 4) derived from a virus or plasmid that has previously attacked the cell. Frequently attributive. The spacers in CRISPR DNA allow it to encode RNAs that recognize such sequences in a foreign genome, at which sequences the RNA molecules bind in a complex with associated proteins that act as molecular scissors and cut the genomic DNA.
