1. In England and Wales.
a. A court held periodically by the sheriff of a county for carrying out certain judicial and administrative functions. Now historical.The nature of the functions of the court, the survival of the old folkmoot, shiremoot, or shire court, varied considerably throughout history. It was formerly frequently known simply as the county (see county n.1 1).
