Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: air n.1, cavalry n.
Etymology: < air n.1 + cavalry n.Although quot. 1913 might suggest a French model, cavalerie aérienne is apparently not recorded in either dictionaries of French or elsewhere until the late 20th-cent., and then chiefly as a calque of the English word.
Military (chiefly U.S.).
A highly mobile division of an army which uses aircraft for a variety of functions, as observation, delivery of supplies and troops, aerial assault, evacuation, etc.
