Etymology: < Old French craisse, cresse = graisse , gresse fat, grease < Latin crassa , feminine of crassus thick, fat, gross, in late Latin also grassus (see Du Cange). In Gaelic créis /kreːʃ/, s with a ‘small’ vowel being always /ʃ/; several instances of a similar change occur in Lowland Scots; compare also gresche = grease n.

transitive. To grease. to creesh the loof (figurative): ‘to grease the palm’, i.e. with a douceur. Cf. to grease a person in the hands at grease v. 4b.
