Etymology: < cow n.1 + gate n.1, gait n.1 going, walk: compare sheep-walk. It was originally a syntactic combination, with ky-gates, kine-gates = cows' gates in plural.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈcow-gate.
A pasture over which a cow may range; pasture for a cow, e.g. in a common field.
