Etymology: < air n.1 + pipe n.1, originally (in sense ‘bronchial tube’) ultimately after post-classical Latin fistula spiritalis trachea (3rd or 4th cent. a.d. in Lactantius; compare spiritus fistula (1651 in the passage translated in quot. 1668), fistula spiritualis (1665 or earlier in a German source). Compare German Luftröhre (a1374), Luftrohr (1551; now rare). With the spec. sense ‘bronchial tube’ compare also earlier lung-pipe n. at lung n. Compounds 2, windpipe n.
A pipe for the supply or passage of air, as a bronchial tube, a ventilation pipe, etc.
