Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: aldehyde n., -ose suffix2.
Etymology: < ald- (in aldehyde n.) + -ose suffix2. The word was first mentioned in a German context by E. Fischer 1890 (in Neue Zeitschr. f. Rübenzucker-Industrie 25 102/2), who credits H. E. Armstrong with the coinage (paraphrased in quot. 1890).
Chemistry.
Any sugar whose molecule (in its open-chain form) contains an aldehyde group. Cf. ketose n. at ketone n. Derivatives.
