Origin: Partly a borrowing from Manx. Partly a borrowing from Irish. Etymons: Manx curragh; Irish cuirreach.
Etymology: < Manx curragh and Irish cuirreach, corrach marsh, bog (Early Irish cuirreach, currach; apparently < corr water-filled hollow, pool (of uncertain origin) + -ach, suffix forming adjectives).Also common in place names, compare e.g. the Curraghs, Ballaugh, Isle of Man (1665 as Curragh), the name of a large wetland in the low-lying north of the island, and probably also the Curragh, Co. Kildare, Ireland (mid 17th cent. or earlier; Early Irish Currech, Irish an Currach), the name of a level stretch of land known for its racecourse and military camp.
Irish English and (now chiefly) Manx English.
