Disease caused by the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans, most commonly affecting humans and other mammals and characterized by granulomatous inflammation of the meninges or lungs, and often occurring as an opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed individuals. Also called torulosis.The disease referred to in quot. 1916 is epizootic lymphangitis, an equine form of histoplasmosis, thought at the time to be caused by a cryptococcus.
