Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew ʿaliyyāh.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew ʿaliyyāh, literally ‘going up, ascent’ (in modern Hebrew also in senses ‘pilgrimage, especially to Jerusalem’ and ‘immigration to Israel’) < Hebrew ʿalāh to ascend.In plural forms in -ot, -oth after the Hebrew plural form ʿaliyyōṯ.

1. The act or privilege of going up to the reading desk of a synagogue for the reading of the Torah, esp. to pronounce the blessings. Also: an action associated with this.
