Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French cultel; Latin cultellus.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman cultel (12th cent.), variant of coltel , cutel , coutel coutel n., and its etymon (ii) classical Latin cultellus knife (see cultellus n.). Compare earlier coutel n.
historical. Now rare.
A type of knife used as a weapon in the Middle Ages. Cf. coutel n.
