Etymology: < post-classical Latin cultellaris (adjective) having the form of a knife (1363 in Chauliac, designating a type of cautery) < classical Latin cultellus knife (see cultellus n.) + -āris -ary suffix1. Compare cultelere n.Quot. a1400 at sense B. shows post-classical Latin cauterium cultellare in an English context. In quot. ?c1425 at sense B. the form cultellare may either show the English adjective (as postmodifier) or use of the Latin form in a loan blend.
