The science or study of human society and culture, and its development. Cf. social anthropology n.‘Cultural anthropology’ is the more common term in the United States, with ‘social anthropology’ usually preferred in Britain. The terms tend to reflect a difference in emphasis between the two disciplines, with ‘cultural anthropology’ aiming to appreciate the whole sphere of human cultural life, by examining historical, political, psychological, and other frameworks. In practice, the disciplines coincide in many respects, and the terms are often used interchangeably.
