Etymology: < crypto- comb. form + -logy comb. form, originally after post-classical Latin cryptologia (see quot. 1641).The post-classical Latin word is apparently first recorded in an English context:1641 J. Wilkins Mercury ii. 14 Cryptologia, or the Secresy of Speaking, may consist either 1. In the matter. 2. In the words.
