单词 czechian
释义

Czechiann.adj.

Brit. /ˈtʃɛkɪən/, U.S. /ˈtʃɛkiən/
Forms: see Czech n. and adj. and -ian suffix; also 1600s 1800s Zechian.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly from a proper name, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: proper name Czechia , -an suffix; Czech n., -ian suffix.
Etymology: Partly (i) < post-classical Latin Czechia, the name of a region or country in central Europe (see note) + -an suffix; and partly (in later use) (ii) < Czech n. + -ian suffix.Czechia (attested in English from 1841) is now (since 2016) the official short name of the Czech Republic, but was used much earlier in English to refer either to Bohemia alone, or to all of the ‘Czech lands’ (the historical regions of Bohemia, Moravia, and Czech Silesia considered collectively). In the latter sense, the name was particularly used from 1918–92 as a means of distinguishing the Czech parts of Czechoslovakia from the Slovakian regions, especially during the Second World War (1939–45) when the state was divided under German occupation. Compare the following:1861 Stirling Observer 12 Sept. From nearly all parts of the vast empire of Francis Joseph come this week news of outbreaks and riots by his discontented subjects. In Czechia and the North meetings of the most revolutionary character were being held.1939 Times 17 June 13/2 Czechia, as the Protectorate is sometimes now called, is little more than a nation of rebels, animated by a determined spirit of independence. With post-classical Latin Czechia (16th cent.) compare Czech Čechy , use of the plural form of Čech Czech n. as a name of the country or region (14th cent. in Old Czech; now usually with reference to Bohemia).
A. n.
A native or inhabitant of the Czech Republic (also known as Czechia) or the historical ‘Czech lands’, or (more specifically) Bohemia; a Czech. Also (now historical): a native or inhabitant of Czechoslovakia; a Czechoslovak. Now rare. For more information on the name Czechia, see the note in the etymology section. For more information on the history of the region, see note at Czech n. 1.
