Phrases 7g).Irish cúpla (16th cent. or earlier) is a borrowing < either English couple n. or its Middle French etymon. Irish focal word (Early Irish focal word, judgement) is probably < a Celtic reflex of the Indo-European base of classical Latin vōx voice n. + a Celtic suffix forming nouns (compare the apparently similarly-formed Welsh †gwaethl debate, contention). Variant forms. The form cúpla focail reflects an erroneous construction of the Irish phrase, with the second element in either the nominative plural or the genitive singular.
