Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally partly modelled on a Danish lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: crown n., prince n.
Etymology: < crown n. + prince n., originally after Danish kronprins (1693) and its model German Kronprinz (1669). Compare also (after German) Dutch kroonprins (1692 or earlier), Swedish kronprins (1703).German Kronprinz was perhaps formed on the model of Kronerbe , lit. ‘crown heir’ (1627 or earlier) and Kurprinz heir apparent of an elector of Germany, lit. ‘electoral prince’ (1640; compare elector n. 3); compare also Erbprinz heir apparent of a member of high nobility, lit. ‘heir prince’ (1668).
A male heir apparent or designate to a throne, originally of a country in northern continental Europe (also as a prefixed title). Also figurative.Not used of the heir to the British throne.
