Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: crown n., princess n.
Etymology: < crown n. + princess n., after Crown prince n. and German Kronprinzessin (1715). Compare Dutch kroonprinses (1731 or earlier), Swedish kron-prinsessa (1747), and Danish kronprinsesse (1695).With quot. 1722 (referring to events of 1715) compare Russian carevna (not in official use after 1721: see tsarevna n.); with quot. 1763 compare Russian cesarevna , a feminine noun corresponding to the masculine cesarevič Cesarewitch n. In quot. 1994 used to render Chinese huáng tàinü, literally ‘emperor's main daughter’ (only in this particular historical context; compare huáng tàizǐ, literally ‘emperor's main son’).
