释义

airen.1

Forms: Middle English air, Middle English ayere, Middle English eyre, 1500s heyre, 1500s–1700s aire, 1600s ayre. N.E.D. (1884) also records a form Middle English aire.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French eire, aire.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman eire, heire and Old French, Middle French aire (see eyrie n.). In of noble air (see sense 1) after Old French de gentil aire (beginning of the 13th cent.). With sense 2 compare also post-classical Latin haera (1250 in a British source; < French). Compare later eyrie n.

airen.2

Forms: 1500s aare, 1600s aire.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin āra.
Etymology: Apparently < classical Latin āra altar (see Ara n.). Compare Middle French aire altar, place where animals are sacrificed (second half of the 15th cent., apparently only in two isolated attestations in one text: see note), and also French are altar (c1610; < Latin). N.E.D. (1884) takes Middle French aire ‘altar’ as the immediate etymon and derives this from classical Latin āra . However, the latter point is probably incorrect (Middle French aire ‘altar’ is probably a spec. sense development of aire area, space (see eyrie n.): see Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch XXV. at area), and the former point is unlikely, since neither of the two English quots. is translated from a French source and the Middle French word is apparently very rare.
Obsolete. rare.
An altar.
