Etymology: Derivative of a simple fuffle v. to disorder: the first syllable is perhaps Gaelic car twist, bend, turn about; used in combination in car-fhocal quibble, prevarication, car-shúil rolling eye, car-tuaitheal wrong turn: compare the Lowland Scots curcuddoch, curdoo, curgloff, curjute, curmurring, curnoited, in which the prefix seems to have the sense of Latin dis-.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: curˈfuffle.
