Etymology: A bad adaptation of Greek κῡριολογικός (of which the normal English representation is cyriologic) ‘speaking literally’ ( < κύριος regular, proper, etc. + λόγος speech, -λογια speaking), applied by Clemens Alexandrinus to hieroglyphics consisting of simple pictures, as opposed to συμβολικός symbolic.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: curioˈlogic.

Of or pertaining to that form of hieroglyphic writing in which objects are represented by pictures, and not by symbolic characters.
