Origin: A borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx cuishag.

Etymology: < Manx cuishag, cushag ragweed, stalk (1835 or earlier), cognate with or formed similarly to Irish cuiseog slender stem, stalk < cos leg, stem, shaft (Early Irish cos ; < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin coxa hip: see coxa n.) + -og, diminutive suffix. Compare Scottish Gaelic cuiseag stalk, stem of a plant, (also) various plants with a straight stem, including ragwort, and Irish cuise kind of grass or reed, meadow grass.Compare also ( < Irish cuiseog) the apparently rare Irish English (chiefly northern) cushog kind of grass, which is recorded in a wordlist in 1905 and also in some later 20th-cent. dictionaries.
