Etymology: Reflecting a regional pronunciation of that kind; compare that kind of thing at kind n. Phrases 3c(a).
U.S. colloquial and regional (Hawaii).
Used familiarly as a conversational filler to indicate or emphasize a person, thing, place, etc., which (named or not) can be understood contextually: ‘this very (thing)’, ‘that particular (person, place, etc.)’.Although sometimes glossed as ‘that kind’ or compared to other terms of indeterminate reference such as whatchamacallit or thingummy, da kine is used more freely: see quot. 1964.
