Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin custos rotulorum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin custos rotulorum (from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin custōs custos n. + rotulōrum , genitive plural of rotulus roll (see roll n.1).In form custos rotularum with alteration after post-classical Latin rotula, variant (with change of gender) of rotulus; compare post-classical Latin custos rotularum (from 1604 or earlier in British sources).
1. In England, Wales, and Ireland: (the title of) the principal Justice of the Peace in a county, having responsibility for the safe keeping of the records of the quarter sessions; = Keeper of the Rolls n. (b) at keeper n. 1c. Now chiefly historical. The office was established in the 14th cent., though the name did not come into use until the 15th cent. In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland the custodianship of the records of the quarter sessions is now a largely ceremonial function and usually fulfilled by the Lord Lieutenant of a county, the office of Keeper of the Rolls having been united with the lord-lieutenancy in England since 1836. In Ireland the title also passed to the Lord Lieutenant of the county, but the role has now been abolished.
