Etymology: < ale n. + cost n.1 The plant was so called on account of its former widespread use to flavour ale. Compare earlier costmary n.
Costmary, Tanacetum balsamita, an aromatic herb that was formerly widely cultivated for medicinal use and for the flavouring and preservation of ale. Cf. alehoof n.
