Compare Italian alepino , aleppino (1521 or earlier as adjective; also as noun in sense ‘native or inhabitant of Aleppo’). Sense B. 1 probably shows a specific use as noun of the adjective. Although it has been suggested that this specific sense of the noun derives < French alépine (noun) in the same sense, the French feminine noun is apparently first attested later (1809 or earlier); it may show a use as noun of feminine of alépin of or relating to Aleppo (1728 (in marchand alépin ‘merchant from Aleppo’) or earlier).
