A very large evergreen cypress, Fitzroya cupressoides, native to temperate South America, with deeply furrowed reddish-brown fibrous bark and scale-like leaves. Also: the valuable, decay-resistant timber obtained from this tree, typically used for construction.The natural population of alerce was much reduced by extensive logging between the 18th and 20th centuries, and it is now considered to be an endangered species.
