Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French aleuromantie; Latin aleuromantia.
Etymology: < (i) French aleuromantie (1546 in Middle French; in form aleuromancie from 1803), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin aleuromantia (15th cent.) < ancient Greek ἄλευρον flour (see aleurone n.) + Hellenistic Greek -μαντεία -mancy comb. form; compare Hellenistic Greek ἀλευρομαντεῖον divination by flour.A less naturalized parallel borrowing aleuromanteia is also occasionally attested; compare:1624 T. Heywood Γυναικεῖον viii. 402 Aeromanteia is a superstitious prediction by the ayre..Another was made from Meale or Chaffe, and was called Alphitomanteia, or Aleuromanteia.
Any of various forms of divination using meal, flour, cakes, etc., esp. as practised by the ancient Greeks. Cf. alphitomancy n.
