Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: French aleurone; German Aleuron.
Etymology: < (i) French aleurone (1856), and its etymon (ii) German Aleuron (T. Hartig 1856, in Bot. Zeitung 14 257) < ancient Greek ἄλευρον flour (usually in plural, ἄλευρα) < the stem of ἀλεῖν to grind ( < the same Indo-European base as Armenian ałal to grind) + -ρον suffix forming nouns (compare earlier ἄλεαρ, ἄλειαρ, plural ἀλέατα, ἀλείατα, also denoting flour).Hartig first described the substance in Bot. Zeitung 13 (1855) 881–2, and subsequently in a later paper in the same issue of that journal (905–6), but used the terms Klebermehl, literally ‘sticky flour’, and Stärkemehl, literally ‘starch flour’, in these papers.
Chiefly Botany.
Protein stored as granules in seeds and other plant storage tissues, esp. in the outermost layer of the endosperm of the seeds of cereals and other grasses. Formerly also: †proteinaceous material found in the ova of certain animals (cf. vitellin n. 1) (obsolete. rare).
