Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin alphos, alphus.
Etymology: < classical Latin alphos (in post-classical Latin also alphus (5th cent.)) skin disease < ancient Greek ἀλϕός dull-white leprosy, especially on the face < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin albus white (see album n.2). Compare Middle French alphe (1562), French alphos (early 18th cent.), alphus (late 18th cent.).
Medicine. Now historical and rare.
Any of various diseases resulting in the presence of white or silvery patches on the skin; esp. (in later use) psoriasis.
