单词 datisca
释义

Datiscan.

Brit. /dəˈtɪskə/, U.S. /dəˈtɪskə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Datisca.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Datisca ( Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 1037) < post-classical Latin datisca, apparently denoting an unrelated plant, usually identified as a species of the genus Catananche (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)) (1549 or earlier, in Latin translations of Dioscorides), of uncertain origin (see note).Dioscorides gives datisca as one of the Latin names of the (different) plant; the corresponding Hellenistic Greek text has δατίσκα and also the variant reading δατίοκα. A derivation from an Iranian language has been suggested, but (although formally possible) this cannot be substantiated.
Botany.
A small genus of perennial plants of the family Datiscaceae, the members of which have alternate pinnate leaves and nitrogen-fixing capabilities. Also (in form datisca): any plant of or formerly included in this genus; esp. bastard hemp, D. cannabina, a yellow-flowered plant native from the eastern Mediterranean to the Himalayas, formerly used as a purgative and as the source of a yellow dye.
