[originally after French datif absolu (1655 in the passage translated in quot. 1746), itself probably after post-classical Latin dativus absolutus (1583 or earlier)] Grammar (in some inflected languages) a dative case of a noun or pronoun with a participle (expressed or implied) in agreement, grammatically independent of the main clause, and expressing the time, occasion, or circumstance of a fact stated; see ablative absolute n. at ablative adj. and n. Compounds.
