单词 damara
释义

Damaran.

/ˈdɑːmərə//ˈdamərə/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Damaras, Damas.
Forms:

α. 1800s Dammara, 1800s Damra, 1800s– Damara.

β. 1800s– Dama /ˈdɑːmə/.

Origin: A borrowing from Khoekhoe. Etymon: Khoekhoe Damara.
Etymology: < Khoekhoe (Nama) Damara, feminine plural of Dama-, originally a derogatory term for dark-skinned people (not restricted to the Damara people; compare Gomadama, literally ‘cattle-Dama’, denoting the Herero). It is unclear why the feminine plural form in Khoekhoe became perceived as the usual singular form of the ethnonym in English use. The self-designation of the Damara people is Khoekhoe (Damara) ǂNūkhoen , literally ‘black people’ (perhaps reflected by English Houquain in quot. 1878). In Berg Damara after German Bergdamara (1838 or earlier) or Dutch Bergdamara (1857 or earlier), both literally ‘mountain Damara’; compare berg n.2
In full Hill Damara, Berg Damara, or Mountain Damara. A member of a black African people who have adopted the Nama language, and who inhabit the mountainous regions of Namibia (formerly called South-West Africa).
