Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin alsinē , -aceous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin alsinē dog's cabbage ( < Hellenistic Greek ἀλσίνη < ancient Greek ἄλσος sacred grove, of unknown origin + -ίνη -ine suffix2) + -aceous suffix. Compare scientific Latin Alsinaceae, former family name (1757 or earlier).
Botany. Now disused.
Belonging to or characteristic of the former family Alsinaceae, comprising herbaceous flowering plants having free (not united) sepals in the corolla, of which the chickweeds (genera Stellaria and Cerastium) are typical.The members of the family Alsinaceae are now included in the family Caryophyllaceae.
