Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Alstonia.
Etymology: In sense 1 < scientific Latin Alstonia, genus name (J. C. Mutis, in C. Linnaeus filius Supplementum Plantarum Systematis Vegetabilium (1781) 39) < the name of Charles Alston (1685–1760), Scottish botanist and physician + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1. In sense 2 < scientific Latin Alstonia, genus name (R. Brown 1809, in Mem. Wernerian Nat. Hist. Soc. (1811) 1 75), an independent formation from the same elements.
1. The plant Symplocos theiformis (formerly Alstonia theiformis) (family Symplocaceae) of Central and South America, used as a substitute for tea. Obsolete.
