Origin: Formed within English, by back-formation. Etymon: darkling adv.
Etymology: Back-formation < darkling adv., apprehended as a present participle, perhaps partly by association with formations in -le suffix 3, as e.g. sparkle v.1 (beside sparkling adj.1).
Chiefly literary and poetic.
1. intransitive. To remain or hide in the dark; to conceal oneself. Obsolete.
