Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Damianite.
Etymology: < French Damianite (1763 in the passage translated in quot. 1766) < post-classical Latin Damianita (1686 or earlier) < Byzantine Greek Δαμιανίτης < Δαμιάνος , the name of the 35th Coptic Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria (reigned 578–607) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare earlier damianist n.Compare German Damianit (1776 or earlier).
Church History. Now rare.
A member of a group of followers of Damian, patriarch of Alexandria, who were accused by their opponents of a variety of Sabellianism; = Angelite n.
