Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Deinonychus n., -o- connective, -saur comb. form.
Etymology: < Deinonychus n. + -o- connective + -saur comb. form, after scientific Latin Deinonychosauria, infraorder name (E. H. Colbert & D. A. Russell 1969, in Amer. Mus. Novitates No. 2380. 43).
Palaeontology.
Any of various carnivorous theropod dinosaurs constituting the Cretaceous infraorder Deinonychosauria, characterized by a large recurved claw on the second toe, and many bird-like features that may have included feathers.The group comprises the families Dromaeosauridae (which includes Velociraptor, Deinonychus, and their relatives) and Troodontidae.
