Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: airy adj., fairy adj.
Etymology: < airy adj. + fairy adj., originally with allusion to the use by Tennyson (see quot. 1830).Although some 19th-cent. authors follow Tennyson in using a comma between the two words, it seems likely that they nevertheless usually constitute a single rhyming compound.
1. Having the ethereal qualities associated with a fairy; delicate, light; graceful; immaterial. Also: enchanting, magical. Now rare.
