Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ajoupa.
Etymology: < French ajoupa, †aioupa (1640; earlier as aioupaue (1614 with reference to Brazil)), probably < Carib ajouppa shed, palmetto or bamboo hut.
In the Caribbean: a wooden-framed hut or shelter with a thatched roof and (sometimes) open sides.
